The landscape of targeted therapy continues to rapidly evolve, and pharmacists play an integral role on the interprofessional health care team. It is important for pharmacists to be aware of new therapy recommendations in order to provide support by monitoring for drug interactions and adverse drug reactions, understanding the toxicities associated with these agents, and providing patient education.

These NCCN Guidelines Insights focus on the introduction of a new page for locally advanced disease in the setting of clinical node negative status, entitled “Clinical N0 Disease, Locally Advanced MCC.” This new algorithm page addresses locally advanced disease, and the panel clarifies the meaning behind the term “nonsurgical” by further defining locally advanced disease. In addition, the guideline includes the management of in-transit disease and updates to the systemic therapy options.

Many health care professionals have had limited education on supportive care topics and have learned on the job. The guidelines and literature continue to advance supportive oncology care.
