Recorded Presentation from the 2017 NCCN Case Manager and Medical Director Program: Cancer 101

Join Michael K. Wong, MD, PhD,  The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center as he presents Cancer 101.

As multidisciplinary cancer care teams become increasingly common, it is important for all members of the care team—including case managers, nurses, pharmacists, and primary care physicians—to understand the basics of cancer biology, diagnosis, and treatment in order to best care for their patients. Informed healthcare providers at all levels can help facilitate smooth communication between a patient with cancer and their healthcare team by answering questions and providing support and resources. In turn, informed healthcare providers can also better communicate important information to other key members of the healthcare team so that the team overall can provide the best possible care.

Target Audience

This program is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses in other roles (i.e., quality management and utilization review), medical directors at managed care organizations, reinsurers, TPAs, and case management and disease management companies who interact with, counsel, and refer patients with cancer to appropriate sources of care and/or make coverage decisions. Programs may also be of interest to nurses, nurse navigators/care coordinators, and physicians who work directly with patients in clinical settings as well as clinical pharmacists in managed care organizations and other settings.

The ACCME/ANCC/ACPE defines “conflict of interest” as when an individual has an opportunity to affect CE content about products or services of a commercial interest with which he/she has a financial relationship.

ACCME, ACPE, and ANCC focuses on financial relationships with commercial interests in the 12-month period preceding the time that the individual is being asked to assume a role controlling content of the CE activity. ACCME, ACPE, and ANCC have not set a minimal dollar amount for relationships to be significant. Inherent in any amount is the incentive to maintain or increase the value of the relationship. The ACCME, ACPE, and ANCC defines “relevant’ financial relationships” as financial relationships in any amount occurring within the past 12 months that create a conflict of interest.

All faculty for this continuing education activity are competent in the subject matter and qualified by experience, training, and/or preparation to the tasks and methods of delivery.
