Recorded Presentation from the NCCN 2018 Nursing Program Webinar Series - Improving Quality of Care for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Patients

LGBT individuals may show an increased incidence of certain cancers, but are less likely to receive regular medical care and standard cancer screenings. This lack of adequate medical care may be partially due to stigma and discrimination in health care settings. By educating themselves on issues facing LGBT patients with cancer and ways to address those issues, nurses can develop strategies to create a welcoming and inclusive practice environment for their LGBT patients.

Target Audience

This educational program is designed to meet the educational needs of oncology nurses who manage patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe how rates of cancer screening uptake, incidence, and treatment outcomes in the LGBT populations compare to the general population and what may account for differences between these groups.
  • Discuss common disparities LGBT individuals experience during their cancer care.
  • Identify strategies to improve the quality of cancer care provided to LGBT patients and to provide welcoming and inclusive practice environments.
