NCCN Oncology Case Manager and Medical Director Program: Supportive Care of Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Patients

Supportive care is essential to improve quality of life and decrease morbidity and mortality in HCT recipients; however, there is a lack of consensus on appropriate supportive care of HCT survivors due to the scarcity of high-quality evidence. Significant barriers to conducting prospective studies and randomized clinical trials on supportive care interventions for HCT recipients exist. These barriers include the relatively small number of HCT patients per center, a lack of resources, methodologic and logistical challenges in conducting randomized trials for supportive care of late complications, and great variability in practices that might obscure definitive conclusions. Although considerable progress has been made in identifying supportive care issues in HCT survivors, large, prospective trials demonstrating the effectiveness of supportive care interventions for HCT-related complications are needed to guide future development of evidence-based guidelines. Importantly, because long-term HCT recipients may no longer be followed by transplant centers, recommendations for supportive care should be geared toward community healthcare providers who may not routinely care for HCT recipients.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, medical directors, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals who manage the care of patients with cancer.  These webinars may be of particular interest to those in care coordination roles and those who interact with, counsel, and refer patients with cancer to appropriate sources of care and/or make coverage decisions in both managed care organizations and clinical settings.

  • Discuss the current treatment paradigms for supportive care of HCT recipients.

NCCN Medical Education Disclosure Policy
