The Role of Integrative Medicine in Cancer

With the large number of patients and survivors already using non-conventional therapies, it is critical for oncology professionals to understand the importance of asking their patients about such modalities and to be knowledgeable enough to discuss their risks, benefits, and goals with patients. Clinicians need to be educated on the importance of using only non-conventional therapies that are evidence-based, integrating them with conventional care, and coordinating conventional and non-conventional care between providers. Clinicians also need to fully understand the benefits of evidence-based integrative therapies so they can offer integrative therapies that are supported by strong evidence to patients and survivors. Clinician education on the topic of integrative therapies can help patients be informed enough to make the best decisions regarding non-conventional and conventional therapies to optimize their oncologic outcomes and quality of life.

Target Audience

This educational program is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other health care professionals who manage patients with cancer.

Following this program, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the risks, benefits, and goals of non-conventional therapies with patients and survivors
  • List several evidence-based, integrative therapies that can be useful for patients with cancer and survivors

NCCN Medical Education Disclosure Policy

It is the policy of NCCN that every 12 months, all faculty, moderators, activity planners and all internal planning staff participating in NCCN continuing education activities are expected to disclose any financial relationships with a commercial interest as defined by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) Standards for Commercial Support. NCCN continuing education considers “relevant financial relationships” as financial relationships in any amount occurring within the past 12 months that create a conflict of interest. NCCN does not set a minimal dollar amount for relationships to be significant. Inherent in any amount is the incentive to maintain or increase the value of the relationship.
