Archived Monthly Oncology Tumor Boards: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Individualized Patient Care - Rectal Cancer

Advances in the Treatment of Locally Advanced or Metastatic Rectal Cancer
The determination of an optimal treatment plan for patients with rectal cancer is a complex process that is reliant on balancing the potential risks and benefits of each treatment option based on an individual patient’s characteristics. Clinicians must be educated about on emerging approaches to personalized treatment for patients with rectal cancer so that the most appropriate treatment option(s) can be offered to each patient. As several of the checkpoint inhibitors have been recently approved for treatment of dMMR/MSI-H metastatic rectal cancer, discussion of the immune-related adverse effects associated with these therapies would be relevant.

Target Audience

This program is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals who manage patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify emerging treatment approaches for locally advanced rectal cancer that may reduce morbidity for certain patients.
  • Describe the total neoadjuvant therapy approach for treatment of rectal cancer, including the benefits and drawbacks of this approach.
  • Discuss recently approved systemic therapy options for metastatic rectal cancer, including how biomarker testing can guide selection of appropriate treatment in this setting.
