Monthly Oncology Tumor Boards: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Individualized Patient Care - Head and Neck Cancer

August 19, 2020

Head and Neck Cancer: Optimal Multidisciplinary Management
Health-related quality of life issues are paramount in head and neck (H&N) cancers, since these tumors affect basic physiologic functions (i.e., the ability to chew, swallow, and breathe), the senses (i.e., taste, smell, hearing), and uniquely human characteristics (i.e., appearance, voice). Despite the ambiguities of PD-L1 testing and definitions, PD-L1 expression may be associated with better outcomes from treatment with immunotherapy for recurrent or metastatic squamous cell H&N cancer (i.e., greater likelihood of response to pembrolizumab and greater survival benefit in response to nivolumab). Emerging data show that cetuximab combined with radiation therapy is not an optimal de-escalation strategy for patients with p16-positive oropharyngeal cancer.

Target Audience

This educational program is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians/oncologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other health care professionals who manage patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Compare and contrast optimal treatment options for patients with locoregionally advanced head and neck cancer.
  • Review the evidence supporting immunotherapy options for patients with recurrent or metastatic head and neck cancer.
  • Recognize the impact of head and neck tumors on quality of life and associated interventions for managing and preventing disease- and treatment-related sequelae.

Definitions
NCCN continuing education considers financial relationships to create a “conflict of interest” when an individual has both a financial relationship with a commercial interest and the opportunity to affect CE content about the products or services of a commercial interest with which he/she and/or a spouse or partner has a financial relationship.

NCCN continuing education considers “relevant financial relationships” as financial relationships in any amount occurring within the past 12 months that create a conflict of interest. NCCN does not set a minimal dollar amount for relationships to be significant. Inherent in any amount is the incentive to maintain or increase the value of the relationship.
