The Importance of Mentorship

Because there is little data about the importance of the mentor-mentee relationship in oncology and how these relationships can predict for long-term career success, much of our knowledge about maximizing the mentor-mentee relationship comes from the corporate business environment and may not be applicable to careers in medicine. Preparing oncology fellows to be successful mentees and, in turn, successful mentors, can help guide future generations to ensure the ongoing success of the mentee-mentor relationship.

Target Audience

This educational program is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other health care professionals who manage patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this program, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the benefits of the mentor-mentee relationship and learn how to get the most out of this relationship
  • Recognize the qualities and attributes of an appropriate mentor and how to identify the right match 
  • Describe the difference between a mentor, a sponsor, and a coach

NCCN Continuing Education Disclosure Policy

It is the policy of NCCN that every 12 months, all faculty, moderators, activity planners and all internal planning staff participating in NCCN continuing education activities are expected to disclose any financial relationships with a commercial interest.
