Updates in the Management of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors

The diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) has undergone significant modification within recent years. Morphological tissue diagnosis in conjunction with ancillary immunohistochemistry (IHC) and genetic testing, to test for molecular markers and assess for mutational status, is now considered the gold standard for diagnosis. Although the incidence of GISTs among the general population is low, given the high rate of resistance to imatinib, newer agents are needed to address first-line treatment failure. Avapritinib and ripretinib are tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) that have since been FDA-approved for the treatment of unresectable or metastatic disease. Continued education for oncology care providers is necessary to convey updates in the management of GISTs and improve patient outcomes.

Target Audience

The program is designed to meet the needs and improve the competence and performance of the interprofessional oncology care team, including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other relevant health care professionals who manage the care of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this program, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of assessing mutational status in GISTs and its treatment and prognostic implications.
  • Review the existing treatment modalities for unresectable and metastatic GISTs and the high rate of drug resistance.
  • Discuss the impact of avapritinib and ripretinib, the two new FDA-approved agents, on the treatment of advanced GISTs.
