NCCN Guidelines® Updates: Gastric and Esophageal Cancers

Recent advances in next generation sequencing (NGS)-based technologies have enabled the molecular characterization of gastroesophageal cancers and have set the stage for the implementation of targeted therapies for the management of patients with advanced disease. Clinicians must consider disease stage, histology and biomarker expression to make decisions regarding optimal care. The selection of regimens for second-line or subsequent therapy for unresectable locally advanced, recurrent or metastatic disease is dependent upon prior therapy and performance status. Decisions regarding treatment for advanced or metastatic gastroesophageal cancers require that clinicians be familiar with new and existing chemotherapy agents and targeted therapies as well as the current evidence regarding the survival rates and toxicities associated with various treatment approaches. Therefore, clinicians should regularly evaluate recent clinical trial data to make informed decisions on the most appropriate treatment plan, particularly as new targeted therapies become available.

Target Audience

The program is designed to meet the needs and improve the competence and performance of the interprofessional oncology care team, including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other relevant health care professionals who manage the care of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this program, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the role of NGS-based techniques in the management of gastroesophageal cancers.
  • Describe the treatment options for second-line and subsequent therapy for patients with metastatic gastroesophageal cancers.
  • Compare and contrast the current evidence for treating metastatic gastric cancer with targeted therapies, and when appropriate, include in the management of these patients.
