Keynote Session: Strategies for Prevention and Control of HPV-Associated Cancers

Vaccines that protect against the types of HPV that cause cervical cancers as well as several other diseases and cancers are routinely recommended for children ages 11 to 12.  HPV vaccines have primarily been evaluated against genital diseases, but will likely prevent most HPV-associated oral cancers as well.  Unfortunately, immunization rates are much lower than for other disease-preventing vaccines with only 49% of adolescents in the 13-17 year age group in the U.S. being up to date with HPV vaccinations in 2017. Despite the availability of vaccines that could prevent the majority of cancers caused by the HPV, many parents are reluctant to have their children vaccinated. In addition, many primary care physicians and pediatricians do not understand the link between HPV and cancer, and they have difficulty communicating about the HPV vaccine. Comprehensive efforts to reduce the burden of HPV-associated malignancies include identifying practical solutions and strategies to increase vaccination rates, improving access to care in underserved populations, improving screening and diagnostic options, and developing novel therapeutics. Physicians need to recognize the relationship between HPV and cancer, be able to communicate the benefits of vaccination, and understand the importance of cancer screening and treatment of precancerous lesions.

Target Audience

The program is designed to meet the needs and improve the competence and performance of the interprofessional oncology care team, including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other relevant health care professionals who manage the care of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe to relevant stakeholders the risks of the human papilloma virus (HPV) to men and women.
  • Discuss the benefits of vaccination in preventing cancers caused by HPV.
  • Incorporate appropriate screening and treatment strategies into the management of those at risk for developing HPV-associated cancers.
