Treatment of Locally Advanced Colorectal Cancer

Trimodal therapy approaches for localized rectal cancer continue to evolve as new data helps define how to best improve outcomes while reducing adverse effects, with total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) among the approaches of recent interest.  Additionally, new therapies have substantially expanded the treatment options for mCRC in recent years, raising new questions about how to select the most appropriate therapy for a specific patient based on their clinical characteristics and biomarker testing results and how to optimally sequence these therapies. Clinicians would benefit from education on relevant clinical trial results for both of these topics and how they may be best applied to clinical practice.

Target Audience

The program is designed to meet the needs and improve the competence and performance of the interprofessional oncology care team, including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other relevant health care professionals who manage the care of patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the total neoadjuvant therapy approach for treating locally advanced rectal cancer and the results from clinical trials investigating this approach.
  • Discuss emerging treatment options for metastatic colorectal cancer and which patients might benefit from these new therapies based on clinical characteristics and biomarker results.
  • Apply clinical trial data into treatment strategies for locally advanced rectal cancer and metastatic colorectal cancer.
