Treatment Considerations for Older Patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia

There is a need for improved therapeutic strategies to manage AML disease progression, especially in older adults. Factors other than chronologic age such as cytogenetics, overall functional status, and the presence or absence of actionable mutations should guide treatment strategies. Older adults may be more susceptible to toxicities, making this an important area for clinicians to be aware of when designing treatment strategies. It is also important to begin implementing palliative care strategies at diagnosis, as returning to life following treatment recovery presents many challenges in this older population.

Target Audience

This program is designed to meet the educational needs of hematology/oncology nurses and nurse practitioners who manage patients with hematologic malignancies.

Learning Objectives

Following this activity, participants should be able to:

  • List the factors to be considered when choosing the most appropriate treatment options for older adult patients.
  • Provide examples of indications for the use of hematopoietic cell transplantation.
  • Describe the management strategies for toxicities associated with the treatment of AML in older adult patients.
