Archived Monthly Oncology Tumor Boards: New Options in Treatment of Relapsed/Refractory Multiple Myeloma
Studies with new drugs classes and new combination regimens have broadened the treatment options for relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (MM). The integration of these novel regimens into the treatment paradigm has shifted the perception of MM from an incurable disease to a chronic one. Clinicians treating patients with relapsed/refractory MM are often faced with a difficult task of deciding who to treat, when to treat, and how to treat, utilizing knowledge of previously administered therapies, comorbidities, potential adverse events, and shared decision with the patient. In MM, even if the patients have been exposed to drug classes, different agents within these respective classes can be rationally used. Many individual factors need to be considered before selecting the optimal therapy. In order to optimize patient outcomes, clinicians need to understand the evidence behind the current recommendations in the guidelines, the rationale for appropriate treatment selection, management of any treatment- or MM-specific adverse events, and emerging strategies.
