Updates in Screening Recommendations for Colorectal Cancer

Due to increasing rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) in younger individuals, the NCCN Guidelines® for Colorectal Cancer Screening support CRC screening in average-risk individuals younger than age 50, though the panel acknowledges that data are stronger to support beginning screening at 50 years. Based on the available data and emerging evidence, methods to further enhance access to screening in African American and other minority populations should be endorsed.

Target Audience

This educational program is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians/oncologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other health care professionals who manage patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this program, participants should be able to:

  • Identify trends in colorectal cancer incidence and mortality rates in certain age groups in the United States.
  • Describe the rationale and data supporting colorectal cancer screening in younger average-risk individuals.
  • Recognize colorectal cancer incidence and mortality rates in African Americans and the importance of screening for this population.
