Cancer Screening and Surveillance Testing for Older Adult Cancer Survivors

Older adult cancer survivors are more likely to experience unique age-related challenges related to physical function, comorbidities, and cognitive function compared with their younger counterparts. Due to these potential issues, cancer screening and surveillance testing may have increased risks for older adult cancer survivors. To optimize care for this patient population, it is important for clinicians to weigh the risks and benefits of screening and/or surveillance testing and to use an individualized approach based on life expectancy, health status, and patient preference.

Target Audience

This educational program is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians/oncologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other health care professionals who manage patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this program, participants should be able to:

  • Compare the risks and benefits of cancer screening and surveillance testing in older adult cancer survivors.
  • Identify older adults who may derive benefit from cancer screening and surveillance testing.
  • Describe the importance of an individualized approach with regards to cancer screening and surveillance.
