Palliative Care and Hematologic Malignancies: Can They Co-Exist?

While palliative care resources are commonly used in patients with solid tumors, often they are not considered a necessary intervention for patients with hematologic malignancies because there is an unspoken rule that the patient is best cared for by the hematology oncology team.  Education on the use of palliative care resources is important to help hematology oncology clinicians potentially lessen the bias that may surround including “outsiders” in the care of their patients, thus allowing these patients and their caregivers to experience the benefits of this resource earlier in their care.

Target Audience

This program is designed to meet the educational needs of hematology/oncology nurses and nurse practitioners who manage patients with hematologic malignancies.

Learning Objectives

Following this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify barriers to incorporating palliative care with hematologic malignancy patients.
  • Describe the benefits of palliative care as part of the care team for hematologic malignancy patients. 
  • Discuss the efficacy of symptom management when palliative care is part of the care team for patients with hematologic malignancies.
