Updates in the Management of Graft-Versus-Host Disease

There have been quite a few developments in the treatment of both acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in recent years, including new drug approvals and new treatment paradigms.  Educating nurses in the identification of symptoms and the treatments available will increase the identification and early treatment of GVHD in patients.  Nurses are in a perfect position to include other team members to address the psychosocial and palliative/symptomatic care of patients with GVHD, both acute and chronic.

Target Audience

This program is designed to meet the educational needs of hematology/oncology nurses and nurse practitioners who manage patients with hematologic malignancies.

Learning Objectives

Following this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify risks for graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after hematopoietic cell transplantation. 
  • Describe presentation and assessment for GVHD.
  • Describe management of GVHD (acute vs. chronic).
