Disparities in Breast Cancer Screening and Management

For many years there have been breast cancer screening, treatment, and survival disparities across various demographics, mostly low-income, racial/ethnic, and rural populations. In order to close the gap in breast cancer care and survival, implementation of policy change, financial assistance, the use of Patient Navigation Programs, and quality mammography screening facilities need to be accessible to all patients. Clinicians need to recognize that these disparities exist and the causes for the disparities to optimally manage their patients with breast cancer.

Target Audience

This educational program is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, PAs, pharmacists, and other health care professionals who manage patients with breast cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this program, participants should be able to:

  • Acknowledge there are disparities in breast cancer across various demographics and recognize the reasons why these disparities exist.
  • Incorporate into clinical practice appropriate strategies to address disparities to optimize care for patients with breast cancer.
  • Describe ways to implement policy, interpersonal, and institutional change to improve care for racial/ethnic and low-income patients.
