Team-Based Management of Immunotherapy-Related Toxicities

Education and training are needed to diagnose and manage irAEs that arise during or after treatment with ICIs or CAR-T therapy, particularly as our understanding of best practices for addressing complex toxicities evolves. Education on this topic will enable clinicians to more rapidly identify when they may need to seek the expertise of disease specialists, and which specialists may be most relevant to their patients’ needs. Clinicians could potentially also use this information to develop their own institutional multidisciplinary team-based initiatives to help aid in irAE diagnosis and management.

Target Audience

This program is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other health care professionals who manage patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the different classes of cancer immunotherapy (i.e., ICIs and CAR-T therapy), and how immunotherapy-related toxicities differ from those elicited by traditional chemotherapy.
  • Identify which organ systems are most commonly affected by immunotherapy-related toxicities and when disease specialist consultation may be warranted.
  • Discuss multidisciplinary strategies to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment of immunotherapy-related toxicities.
