Prophylaxis for Cancer-Associated Venous Thromboembolic Disease

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is common among patients with cancer and represents an appreciable risk, with associated morbidity and mortality. Accurate VTE risk assessment is important in identifying appropriate candidates for VTE prophylaxis and at times can prevent unnecessary use of anticoagulants. Selecting a suitable regimen in these patients requires guidance from physicians with experience treating various oncology subpopulations.

Target Audience

This educational program is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians/oncologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other health care professionals who manage patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this program, participants should be able to:

  • Gauge the extent of venous thromboembolism (VTE) development in oncology patients and recognize existing problems in venous thromboembolic prophylaxis for oncology patients.
  • Identify the VTE risk assessment tools available and describe how to utilize Khorana Score.
  • Compare and contrast the different anticoagulation regimens for oncology patients identified as at risk for VTE development.
