Archived Monthly Oncology Tumor Boards: Updates in Treatment of Hairy Cell Leukemia

The treatment landscape of hairy cell leukemia (HCL) has evolved significantly in recent years with the identification of recurrent mutations in several genes and the development of small molecular inhibitors targeted against the pathways involved in the pathogenesis of HCL. In addition to immunophenotyping, the use of molecular analysis to distinguish classic HCL from HCL-variant is rapidly expanding. Supportive care for the prevention and management of infectious complications should be an integral part of the management of patients with HCL. Given the rarity of the disease, it is essential to educate clinicians on the recent advances as well as challenges involved in the diagnosis and management of classical HCL and HCL-variant.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians/oncologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other health care professionals who manage patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the distinct molecular features of classical hairy cell leukemia and hairy cell leukemia variant.
  • Discuss the current treatment options and the need for the development of novel agents for the treatment of classical hairy cell leukemia.
  • Review the evidence from clinical trials supporting the use of small molecule inhibitors for the treatment of classical hairy cell leukemia (newly diagnosed, relapsed/refractory and progressive disease).
