The Experience of Early Phase Clinical Trial Participants

Early-phase clinical trials investigate novel therapeutics, with recent advances improving response rates and toxicity. Participants often have advanced disease, have received multiple lines of therapy and may have exhausted standard-of-care options. Participants often present with hope that a clinical trial will provide benefit, awareness that it may not, and the uncertainty that comes with having a serious and potentially life-limiting illness.
This activity aims to address the evolving landscape of early phase clinical trials, the complexity of the clinical trials experience for patients, and the importance and impact of early palliative care intervention for clinical trials participants. Clinicians should feel empowered to take on a proactive role which may improve patient care, improve quality of life, facilitate access to new therapies and improve the overall clinical trials experience for patients.
Target Audience
This program is designed to meet the educational needs of oncology nurses who treat people with cancer.
Learning Objectives
Following this activity, participants should be able to:
- Explain the purpose, design, and therapeutic focus of early-phase clinical trials, including recent advances in efficacy and safety.
- Assess the challenges experienced by people with cancer participating in early-phase trials, particularly those with advanced disease and limited standard-of-care options.
- Integrate principles of early palliative and supportive care into nursing practice to optimize quality of life, facilitate access to novel therapies, and enhance the overall clinical trial experience for people with cancer.
