Screening for More than Cancer: Social Determinants of Health Assessments in the Infusion Suite Using the NCCN Distress Thermometer

One of the primary ways to address health equity and reduce disparities is to focus on the social determinates of health (SDOH). Utilizing the NCCN Distress Screening Tool as a starting point for deeper inquiry should be implemented on the initial visit and repeated regularly throughout treatment as standard-of-care for patients. This allows empowerment of the patient to effectively communicate and helps clinicians to proactively address the emotional and psychosocial needs of their patients, contributing to a more holistic and patient-centered approach to care.
