Gastric and Esophageal Cancers: Clinical Updates and Nursing Implications

In the United States, the FDA has approved over 150 immunotherapies for cancer care. Immunotherapies vary widely by mechanism of action and thus impact patients differently from standard chemotherapy and biotherapies. It is important that as the role of immunotherapy in patient treatment plans continues to evolve, nursing care must evolve with it. This includes nursing interventions such as assessments, planning, communication and education. These interventions play an important role in patients’ quality of life and treatment outcomes.
Target Audience
This program is designed to meet the educational needs of oncology nurses who treat people with cancer.
Learning Objectives
Following this activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify emerging therapies for patients with either esophageal or gastric cancer.
- Identify nursing interventions in the care of patients receiving newer immunotherapies and targeted therapies.
- Understand the impact the nursing role will have on quality of life and patient outcomes in this setting.
