An Oncology-Specific Outpatient Perioperative Department: What an Extended Recovery Unit Can Offer Post Surgery

Extended Recovery Units (ERUs) provide focused, short-term recovery support for patients undergoing cancer-related surgeries or procedures that require more than routine post-op monitoring but do not necessitate a full hospital admission. With this major shift in practice, procedures that previously required multiday admissions are now seeing patients and caregivers return home after a minimum of 24 hours. This accelerated immediate post-op period requires nurses in the ERU to have specialized training to effectively manage the patient and all nurses in the patient’s oncology team to have an increased understanding of their needs post-operatively to reduce complications.

Target Audience

This program is designed to meet the educational needs of oncology nurses who treat people with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the Extended Recovery Unit (ERU) model.
  • Identify specialized training required for oncology nurses working in ERUs.
  • Discuss the impact of ERUs on patient outcomes, hospital bed shortages and post-operative workflows.
