Archived NCCN Tumor Boards: Management of Early-Stage, Invasive, Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer

With the evolving strategies for locoregional management of early-stage breast cancer, the decisions to de-escalate surgery and when to omit axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) and/or sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) and to select the appropriate radiation therapy (RT) dosing should always involve shared decision-making between the patient and clinician, considering the specific tumor biology, other clinical features, and the potential impact on adjuvant systemic therapy decisions. Using a case-based approach can be beneficial to understand the de-escalation approaches in surgery and radiation treatment.

The systemic therapy landscape of early-stage breast cancer is also evolving constantly and management is becoming increasingly risk-adapted. The decision-making process of treatment selection should involve careful consideration of the available evidence and a detailed discussion of the associated benefits and risks with patients.

Target Audience

This educational program is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians/oncologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants/associates, pharmacists, and other health care professionals who manage patients with cancer.

Learning Objectives

Following this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize key factors that influence selection of systemic neoadjuvant/adjuvant therapy for patients with non-metastatic breast cancer.
  • Describe how interdisciplinary collaboration among surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and shared-decision with the patient is essential for individualized treatment to optimize outcomes and minimize morbidity.
