Recorded Presentation from the 2017 NCCN Case Manager and Medical Director Program: Updates in the Management of Breast Cancer
Join Karen Lisa Smith, MD, MPH, The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins as she presents Updates in the Management of Breast Cancer as part of the NCCN 2017 Oncology Case Manager and Medical Director Program Webinar Series.
Breast cancer is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death. The American Cancer Society has estimated 255,180 will be diagnosed and 41,070 will die of breast cancer in the United States in 2017. The clinical diagnosis and management of patients with breast cancer are complex and varied and continuously evolving. It is important to understand the overview of management of both localized as well as advanced breast cancer and also learn about the recent advances in management to coordinate optimal care.
The treatment decision-making process should involve a detailed discussion of the benefits and risks associated with all possible treatment strategies. Most often, case managers oversee a patient’s care throughout diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. In order to help their patients navigate through the tests and treatments, it is essential for case managers to stay up-to-date on currently available and emerging evidence-based approaches for the management of breast cancer. By staying up-to-date with the recent advances in breast cancer management, case managers can help patients get through the complexities of the treatment plan, get quicker responses to important questions, help manage treatment-related crises, and connect the patient and family to appropriate resources and help patients achieve cost-effective and high-quality care.
Target Audience
This program is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses in other roles (i.e., quality management and utilization review), medical directors at managed care organizations, reinsurers, TPAs, and case management and disease management companies who interact with, counsel, and refer patients with cancer to appropriate sources of care and/or make coverage decisions. Programs may also be of interest to nurses, nurse navigators/care coordinators, and physicians who work directly with patients in clinical settings as well as clinical pharmacists in managed care organizations and other settings.
Learning Objectives
Following this activity, participants should be able to:
- Provide caregivers and patients with localized breast cancer information about all available treatment options and discuss benefits versus harms for informed shared-decision making.
- Explain the role of available genomic assays in decision-making regarding adjuvant chemotherapy and extended adjuvant endocrine therapy.
- Describe the advances in systemic therapy options for patients with advanced breast cancer.

The ACCME/ANCC/ACPE defines “conflict of interest” as when an individual has an opportunity to affect CE content about products or services of a commercial interest with which he/she has a financial relationship.
ACCME, ACPE, and ANCC focuses on financial relationships with commercial interests in the 12-month period preceding the time that the individual is being asked to assume a role controlling content of the CE activity. ACCME, ACPE, and ANCC have not set a minimal dollar amount for relationships to be significant. Inherent in any amount is the incentive to maintain or increase the value of the relationship. The ACCME, ACPE, and ANCC defines “relevant’ financial relationships” as financial relationships in any amount occurring within the past 12 months that create a conflict of interest.
All faculty for this continuing education activity are competent in the subject matter and qualified by experience, training, and/or preparation to the tasks and methods of delivery.
