NCCN 2018-2019 Case Manager and Medical Director Program: Integrating Palliative Care into the Oncology Care Continuum
Although there is general agreement on the importance and benefits of early integration of palliative care in oncology, timely and seamless integration remains a major challenge. It is important for clinicians to understand the potential benefits of palliative care in oncology for patients, caregivers, and health care professionals. Additionally, clinicians require education and practical skills training to integrate palliative care as part of routine oncology practice.
This program is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses in other roles (e.g., quality management and utilization review), medical directors at managed care organizations, reinsurers, TPAs, and case management and disease management companies who interact with, counsel, and refer patients with cancer to appropriate sources of care and/or make coverage decisions. Programs may also be of interest to nurses, nurse navigators/care coordinators, and physicians who work directly with patients in clinical settings as well as clinical pharmacists in managed care organizations and other settings.
Following this activity, participants should be able to:
- Explain the importance of early integration of palliative care in oncology.
- Describe approaches for integrating palliative care into oncology.
- Apply knowledge gained towards the incorporation of palliative care into routine, everyday practice.

NCCN Medical Education Disclosure Policy

NCCN continuing education considers financial relationships to create a “conflict of interest” when an individual has both a financial relationship with a commercial interest and the opportunity to affect CE content about the products or services of a commercial interest with which he/she and/or a spouse or partner has a financial relationship.
NCCN continuing education considers “relevant financial relationships” as financial relationships in any amount occurring within the past 12 months that create a conflict of interest. NCCN does not set a minimal dollar amount for relationships to be significant. Inherent in any amount is the incentive to maintain or increase the value of the relationship.
All faculty for this continuing education activity are competent in the subject matter and qualified by experience, training, and/or preparation for the tasks and methods of delivery.
Faculty presentations may include discussion of off-label use. Faculty will disclose that the use in question is not currently approved by the FDA per the product labeling.
