NCCN 2018-2019 Oncology Case Manager and Medical Director Program™ Live Webinars

Although physicians are responsible for the treatment plans of patients with cancer, treatment is often reviewed, approved, or denied—and in many ways managed—by health plan case managers. Unfortunately, many case managers lack an oncology background and work with cancer patients as only one aspect of their responsibilities.  In addition to needing clinical knowledge, they may also require resources on case management techniques specific to cancer. Managed care case managers, utilization review nurses, and others may look to their medical directors for information and education. However, payer medical directors often lack an oncology background as well.  Because of the complexity of this group of diseases and the rapid evolution of the standard of care, both case managers and medical directors often look to resources outside their organizations for reliable information. Feedback for this program was sought from managed care case managers, medical directors, and leadership from managed care and case management organizations. This process confirmed the continued need for cancer-specific clinical and case management information.  It also confirmed that NCCN is considered an ideal organization to provide education on cancer topics, advancing the quality and effectiveness of care, and care management techniques.

Target Audience

This program is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses in other roles (e.g., quality management and utilization review), medical directors at managed care organizations, reinsurers, TPAs, and case management and disease management companies who interact with, counsel, and refer patients with cancer to appropriate sources of care and/or make coverage decisions. Programs may also be of interest to nurses, nurse navigators/care coordinators, and physicians who work directly with patients in clinical settings as well as clinical pharmacists in managed care organizations and other settings.

Learning Objectives

The goal of this project is to ensure that case managers, nurses, medical directors, and other members of the multidisciplinary oncology team have the knowledge and skills necessary to:

  • Apply the current standards of oncology care and NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines®) to optimize the management of patients with various cancer types.
  • Review new, emerging and novel therapeutic agents and treatment strategies and incorporate these into the management of patients with cancer.
  • Communicate the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the management of patients with cancer.

NCCN Medical Education Disclosure Policy
It is the policy of NCCN that every 12 months, all faculty, moderators, activity planners and all internal planning staff participating in NCCN continuing education activities are expected to disclose any financial relationships with a commercial interest as defined by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) Standards for Commercial Support. In addition, all faculty presentations have been reviewed for adherence to the ACCME’s Standards for Commercial Support (the provider develops activities/educational interventions independent of commercial interests [SCS 1, 2 and 6] by experts on the topics).

Per the ACCME Standards for Commercial Support, individuals who do not disclose relevant financial relationships will be disqualified from involvement in the CE activity as a content developer, planner, or presenter. A complete list of individuals’ relationships with external entities is available upon request.

Definitions
NCCN continuing education considers financial relationships to create a “conflict of interest” when an individual has both a financial relationship with a commercial interest and the opportunity to affect CE content about the products or services of a commercial interest with which he/she and/or a spouse or partner has a financial relationship.

NCCN continuing education considers “relevant financial relationships” as financial relationships in any amount occurring within the past 12 months that create a conflict of interest. NCCN does not set a minimal dollar amount for relationships to be significant. Inherent in any amount is the incentive to maintain or increase the value of the relationship.

Faculty Disclaimers
All faculty for this continuing education activity are competent in the subject matter and qualified by experience, training, and/or preparation for the tasks and methods of delivery.

Faculty presentations may include discussion of off-label use. Faculty will disclose that the use in question is not currently approved by the FDA per the product labeling.

Full disclosure of faculty relationships will be made prior to the activity.

This program has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ for physicians and will award contact hours for nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals for both the live webinars and recorded webcasts. NCCN will also seek approval for case manager clock hours. Complete accreditation information is provided before each individual educational activity.
