Cultivating Nursing Resilience during a Pandemic
COVID-19 is a complex, evolving global pandemic with no foreseeable resolution. The onset of the virus has stressed a workforce already experiencing a shortage of qualified nurses and a high burnout rate. It may take years for the full impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nurses to be understood. Not only are nurses caring for patients with multifaceted medical issues, the threat of personal exposure/illness to the nurse or their loved ones is unprecedented. Due to isolation protocols, nurses are tasked now more than ever before with being the patient and family’s advocate, voice and emotional support. This creates a new dynamic of nurse-patient relationships and can challenge established interpersonal boundaries nurses have created while caring for patients. Current practices that foster nursing resilience need to be evaluated, recognized, enhanced and supported by management and institutional leadership. Protocols need to be put in place to ensure that nursing and other health care staff have access to support and resources needed to persevere through this challenging time.
This educational program is designed to meet the educational needs of oncology nurses who manage patients with cancer.
Following this activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the concept of resilience and how it relates to the field of nursing.
- Identify challenges in cultivating nursing resilience during a pandemic.
- Discuss techniques that will assist in fostering nursing resilience now and in times of future global health crises.

All faculty for this continuing education activity are competent in the subject matter and qualified by experience, training, and/or preparation for the tasks and methods of delivery.
Faculty presentations may include discussion of off-label use. Faculty will disclose that the use in question is not currently approved by the FDA per the product labeling.
